3:23PM - Craft Teacher Seeks Class Space

sogwife(East Bay - sorry, no local filter)

(If this doesn't sound like you, but you know someone it might work for, please point them to this post. Thanks!)

Make Your Spare Space Pay w/out a Roommate

Seeking Weekly or Bi-Weekly Use of Large Room for Craft Lessons

Could you use a little extra cash? Do you have a large room, two-car garage, or basement with space for 2 or 3 six-foot tables and room for people to sit at them? Is your space located in the Oakland, Berkeley, or Emeryville area? Are you open to alternate forms of spirituality?

I'd like to make a deal with you!

My name is Carin Huber. I've been a pagan for most of my adult life, and a crafter for far longer. I am a craft writer and editor for the AntiCraft (http://theanticraft.com) and for 42 Magazine (http://42magazine.com/). I have a series of classes I want to offer to other pagans who want to learn ways to make their own tools and supplies for their spiritual practice, and I am also developing some classes for anyone who enjoys making things with their own hands.

I need space to hold my classes each week (or two weeks, depending on your schedule), and while my needs are specific, they're not great or unusual. I need room to set up a couple long tables (or use yours) to host up to 15-20 people for a different craft project each session. Some crafts will need access to a sink, or, failing that, a couple buckets of water. Some crafts will involve paint, so I'd prefer not to have an expensive carpet underfoot. Some crafts will need access to power outlets. (I will provide extension cords if needed.) I don't expect to do anything that requires ventilation, aside from putting a bunch of people in one room. :)

If you have a space that can meet these needs, and would not mind filling it with friendly strangers on a weekly-to-bi-weekly basis, in exchange for a little extra cash and an invitation to join the class (for one or two projects, I might ask you for a few dollars for the materials, but mostly not) I would really like to talk to you.

Please contact me at carin at jhuger dot com.

Thanks! :)

1:30PM - anyone need a Maypole?

I have a twenty foot tall Maypole that I am looking to find a new home for. It's made from ABS plastic in two 10' sections, painted a dark brown, and has a wide wooden base with large metal stakes to secure it to a grass or dirt surface. There is also a ribbon topper with twelve 1' wide satin ribbons of different colors, each one long enough to use with the pole. There is a large eyelet at the top of the pole to attach the ribbons to.

I do not have a picture, unfortunately (all lost in a hard drive crash), but everything is here at my home, in storage that is easily accessible (I live in San Jose). It cost us approximately $100 to build this Maypole. I'd like to recoup my costs, but I am certainly willing to accept offers. Mostly, I'd like to see this go to a coven/group/organization that can really use it!

Please reply to this post if you are interested.

9:33PM - Ophiuchus

Apart from an obvious reference to the demon seed, “9” is placed lower than it should be thus disturbing the viewer further into an ominous three year venture to that of Ophiuchus (see http://www.thepropheticlight.com).

I just realized I hadn't posted about this to this forum. We've started a Bay Area ogham study group the meets on the fourth Saturday of the month (that's this Saturday, in case you missed it like I did) in Hayward starting at 2 p.m. Since it's in a private residence, I'm not going to post direction here, but if you are going to be coming, contact either me or hilarypoet for directions.

2:26PM - Arts-Related Employment and a Big Move

Hi all!   I hope it's okay for me to post here.  I'm a visually impaired chick from the East Coast who'd desperately like to move to SF, and as many of us pagan-folk tend to be artsy, I figgered I might as well drop a pebble into this well. ;)

Might any of you happen to have any resources or advice for finding housing & arts-related employment in the area?  I've been on CL and many of the big job/apartment web sites, but it was my hope that the kind folks who live there might have some especially good ideas/input. ^_^

Many Grateful Thanks,

PS-  I have two adorable black cats who'd be coming w/me, a bevy of office-related skills, and would be happy to even do reception in a gallery, museum, recording studio, design art for a local new age shop, etc.:)  I sing all kinds of music, and my art is predominantly fantasy/dark art, w/a good measure of traditional portraiture, photography, digital art and craftery mixed in. ;)  Thanks so much again for all your help! ^_^

5:07PM - Twas the Evening of Samhain (Yoinked from naedyschannirra)

’Twas the evening of Samhain, and all through the place
Were Pagans preparing the ritual space.
The candles were set in the corners with care,
In hopes that the Watchtowers soon would be there.
We all had our robes on, as is habitual
And had just settled down and were starting our ritual
When out on the porch there arose such a chorus
That we went to the door, and waiting there for us
Were children in costumes of various kinds
With visions of chocolate bright in their minds.

In all of our workings, we’d almost forgot,
But we had purchased candy, we’d purchased a LOT
And so, as they flocked from all over the street,
They all got some chocolate or something else sweet.
We didn’t think twice of delaying our rite,
Kids just don’t have this much fun every night.
For hours they came, with the time-honored schtick,
Of giving a choice: a treat or a trick.
As is proper, the parents were there for the games,
Watching the children and calling their names.
“On Vader, On Leia,
On Dexter and DeeDee,
On Xena, on Buffy,
On Casper and Tweety!
To the block of apartments on the neighboring road
You’ll get so much candy, you’ll have to be towed!”

The volume of children eventually dropped,
And as it grew darker, it finally stopped.
But as we prepared to return to our rite,
One child more stepped out of the night.
She couldn’t have been more than twelve or thirteen.
Her hair was deep red, and her robe, forest green
With a simple gold cord tying off at the waist.
She’d a staff in her hand and a smile on her face.
No make-up, nor mask, or accompanying kitsch,
So we asked who she was; she replied, “A Witch!
And no, I don’t fly through the sky on my broom,
I only use that thing for cleaning my room.
My magical powers aren’t really that neat,
And I won’t threaten tricks; I’ll just ask for a treat.”
We found it refreshing, so we gave incense cones,
A candle, a crystal, a few other stones,
And the rest of the candy which might fill a van
She turned to her father, a man dressed as Pan
And laughed, “Yes, I know, Dad, it’s past time for bed,”
And started to leave, but she first turned and said,
“I’m sorry for further delaying your rite.
Blessed Samhain to all, and a magical night.”

9:18PM - OZ colon cancer surgery scheduled

From Oberon Zell-Ravenheart
8/27/08 report

To all my dear Friends,

After a bit of concern regarding my surgeon's vacation plans, and the possibility that he wouldn't be able to do this surgery until Sept. 15 when he returns, we got it all worked out today. I've been on a liquid diet all day, and tonight I'll be drinking Citrate of Magnesium. Tomorrow morning (Thurs., 8/28), at 10:00 am, I'll be checking into the Petaluma Valley Hospital in Petaluma, CA, where they'll hook me up to an IV and begin the prep work.

6:54PM - feral kittens need a home

These are two 7 week old kittens... long story but I pulled them out of the pound at the request of a friend, not realizing it meant I would have to house the cats...

and my landlord is ripping out my bathroom due to termites and leaky tile. opps.

I can't have kittens right now! 16 years later I still have the last set that were only supposed to be here "just a week" so I have zero credibility. I live in San Jose and the law is 2 cats - max.

Anyhow, these two have been feral and would desperately like to go back to being feral. I have read websites saying with work they could be domesticated again.

kittens need homes

the tabby is VERY curious and tends to be more bold.

the black one is very soft, and despite her best efforts to resist a chin rub, will purr. Her marking are neat- she is a black on black tabby if you look closely.

I have the phone number for a $10 neuter in San Jose, but they can't be neutered for 2 more months. Both are female.
I am looking for someone who will promise to get them neutered as the shelters around here are over flowing with kittens, and the result is heartbreaking.

7:31PM - National Transgender Day of Remembrance 2007 List of the Dead

I apologize to those who have complained about my lack of lj-cut's. Occasionally, I feel the abuse to ya'll's friends pages warranted. This is one of those times. Other times, I'm just a rude idiot. This is not one of those times. Please forgive me.

Many or most of you probably already know this, but tomorrow, November
20, is the National (in the U.S.) Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day
chosen in remembrance of a transwoman who was killed (Rita Hester) in
order for us all to remember those throughout the year who have been
killed or died because of their gender identity or presentation.

Every year, I post the list of that year's dead, that their names might
be known, where possible, and they might be remembered, even if for
just one day. The Greco-Romans believed that immortality was to be found
in the memory of those still living and this was why they considered a
braggart nature a heroic virtue. Let us thus remember these victims,
who have historically suffered great mutilations in the course of their
murder, as if their killers were trying to erase them from the
photograph of existence.

All the victims from all years past may be found on

After the list of the dead follows the details of the San Jose Day of
Remembbrance which I will be attending. If you live in the area of
Silicon Valley, please come. If not, I beg of you to find out where and
when the nearest remembrance is. Many of the dead were alone when they
died, and many believed they would always be alone even while they
lived. Let not their loneliness continue into the chill after death. Let
them be warmed by the fire of our tears, our thoughts, and our prayers.

Whichever of the alphabet soup you are (LGBTQQIA -- Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer, Intersex, or Ally -- the last
meaning "we invite straight, cisgendered (non-trans) folk too"), please do
this for them.

Lacking a specific formula as yet, I merely call upon the mup gods to
look, read, and remember:
Hermaphroditus, look at the names of the dead.
Ardhanarisvara, read the names of the dead.
Melek Ta'us, remember the names of the dead.
Eris, look at the names of the dead.
Antinous, read the names of the dead.
Hoor-paar-kraat, remember the names of the dead.
Tlazolteotl, look at the names of the dead.
Azathoth, look at the names of the dead.
Pomba-Gira, read the names of the dead.
Inanna, remember the names of the dead.

List of murdered trans people from Nov. 2006 to Nov. 2007.
